Book: Multimedia Management (Innovative Technology Series)
Publisher: ISTE Publishing Company
For years, industry has predicted and anticipated the arrival of multimedia servicesvia the network. From all indications, this new age is upon us now especiallywith the emergence of the Internet and the huge potential of e-commerce.The study of multimedia transmission over various network technologies hasbeen the subject of research by research teams all over the world in industrialand research laboratories. Much of that work has focused on QoS (Quality ofService) management in B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital) networkssuch as ATM, and recently, IP-based networks. Whilst originally thesetwo technologies were considered as antagonist, the actual enhancement of operator’score networks show, on the contrary, an integrated approach to the corenetwork (with MPLS) and the access network (with ADSL). The integrations ofvarious technologies using sophisticated load balancing and routing techniqueswill allow the deployment of new intelligent approaches to control the traffic andcongestion at different levels of the network to provide the end user with QoScustomised multimedia communications. The contributions within this publication are based on presentations made at theNetworking 2000 main conference, held in Paris, France, on May 19, 2000.
